BRIEFING

BRIEFING: Venezuelan Presidential Election

Wednesday 17 July @ 1600hrs BST (London) / 1100hrs EDT (New York)

On 28 July, Venezuela will hold its presidential election. However, this is highly unlikely to be either free or fair. The election comes against the backdrop of President Nicolás Maduro’s escalating repression and intimidation campaign. Meanwhile, the support for opposition candidate Edmundo González Urrutia and the de-facto opposition leader María Corina Machado has eclipsed that of Maduro. The election will take place amid the threat of conflict over the Essequibo region with neighbouring Guyana while further US oil and gas sector sanctions loom over Venezuela.

Join us for a webinar where we will outline the most likely scenarios following the election. We will explore how Maduro will seek to secure another term in office, given the staunch opposition to his regime. We will also assess the domestic unrest outlook and the likelihood of further US sanctions.
