BRIEFING: Election Preview – Tunisia and Mozambique

Friday 13 September @ 1500hrs BST (London) / 1000hrs EDT (New York)

The African region will undergo two elections in October which will likely see the return of incumbent governments amid allegations of electoral fraud in Mozambique and Tunisia. In both states the legitimacy of the polls will be challenged by the government's repression of the opposition and the legacy of past elections, significantly increasing the risk of protests upon the announcement of results. Such unrest will likely be mitigated by a robust security response, driving human rights risks and likely sustaining anti-government sentiment, contributing to a variety of security and economic challenges.
