BRIEFING: Sri Lanka – Presidential Election Preview

Wednesday 11 September @ 1500hrs BST (London) / 1000hrs EDT (New York)

On 21st September, Sri Lankans will go to the polls to decide the next president from a crowded field of more than 30 candidates. The election comes as Sri Lanka continues to slowly recover from the economic crisis which culminated in a sovereign default in 2022, with the measures implemented to tackle the crisis making incumbent President Ranil Wickremesinghe unpopular in some quarters. Join our briefing as we discuss the security risks around the election, and what the result could mean for Sri Lanka’s future and the ongoing IMF support for the economy.
