BRIEFING: Election Preview – Georgia and Moldova

Wednesday 16 October at 1500hrs BST (London) / 1000hrs EDT (New York)

Georgians and Moldovans will head to the polls in October to vote in key elections which will likely determine the trajectory of their foreign policy over the coming years. The Georgian parliamentary election and the Moldovan presidential election, the latter of which will be held alongside a referendum on EU membership, will take place in a heavily polarised political landscape. In Georgia, the increasingly anti-West stance of the current government has ultimately jeopardised Tbilisi’s aspirations to join the EU, with the ruling party’s re-election likely to further strain relations vis-à-vis the West. Meanwhile, the two votes in Moldova will almost certainly be vulnerable to Russian and pro-Russia destabilisation attempts to prevent Chișinău’s closer European integration.
