RUSSIAN INCURSIONS INTO NATO AIRSPACE WILL DRIVE AIR TRAVEL DISRUPTION, CRITICAL INFRASTRUCTURE RISKS

Since Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022, unauthorised incursions into the Baltic airspace have occurred on a semi-regular basis. However, the recent uptick in Russian jet and drone activity along NATO’s eastern flank likely reflects an intensification of Russian efforts to test NATO’s readiness and responses.

In Germany, suspected Russian reconnaissance drone activity has been detected near numerous sensitive military facilities, defence companies and critical infrastructure, including liquefied natural gas (LNG) terminals, port facilities and railways. Since 22 September, drones have also been sighted over Danish airports and military sites.
