Stewart Paterson

Senior Advisor

Stewart Paterson spent 30 years in capital markets, 18 of them in Asia. Having started his career with Hill Samuel in London in 1991, he has covered the full spectrum of global capital markets as an economist, fund manager and strategist.  He has worked in London, Mumbai, Hong Kong and Singapore in senior roles with Credit Suisse First Boston, CLSA and Riley Paterson Investment Management in Singapore which he co-founded.

In 2019 Stewart authored “China, Trade and Power – why the west’s economic engagement has failed.” He has been a fellow, and now senior fellow, at the Hinrich Foundation – an Asia based think tank dedicated to promoting sustainable trade – since 2020. He is the author of numerous papers on China’s political economy; China’s economic statecraft; BRI; RMB internationalization and the interaction of geopolitics on global trade and the world economy. He is a frequent contributor to main stream media on China and global trade, and consults to clients in the Government and private sectors. He holds an MA in political economy from the University of Aberdeen.
